Irbid Municipality is considered as the oldest between the municipalities in Jordan, where it was established at 1881 at Al-Tal area, with nearly (700) thousand citizens and its area is nearly (450) square kilometers.

In 2001 a decision was achieved from the cabinet to merge 16 nearby areas to Irbid City to form with the old seventh areas Greater Irbid Municipality.
